What can Indie Formatting do with Vellum
Box Sets
Volumes
Advance Reader Copies (ARC's)
Social Media Links
Store Links
Affiliate Codes
- Box sets combine multiple books into one, and can be used to collect all of the volumes of a series into one edition, or to assemble an anthology of works from multiple authors.
Volumes
- A book within a box set is represented by a Volume, a special element type that can contain chapters and other elements of a book. With Volumes, the books in your box set are displayed in the Navigator as a hierarchy.
Advance Reader Copies (ARC's)
- You can send out an Advance Reader Copies (ARC's) of your book to a select group of readers for early feedback, proofreading, or an initial set of reviews for your book. At a minimum, you will want to generate the Kindle and Generic EPUB versions of your book. Make sure you include a ARC cover for your ebook if not IFS can make one for you at additional cost.
- These services can deliver your ARC to your readers and help them load your book onto their devices BookFunnel and InstaFreebie. Note: When using BookFunnel, be sure to enable the switch labeled My books require the KF8 format.
Social Media Links
- Indie Formatting can provide links to your social media profiles, and Vellum will include icons and links to these services below your text. In your eBook, eReaders will be able to click the associated icon to find your profile and follow updates.
- About the Author page includes entries for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, YouTube, Amazon, BookBub and Goodreads. Note: because an Amazon Author profile refers to amazon.com, it will be excluded from ebooks created for iBooks, Kobo, and other stores.
- Of course, readers won’t be able to click on icons in your paperback. So I present social media profiles in your print edition by either showing the just the icon or icons and links.
Store Links
- With Store Links, you can take your reader to an online store to find more of your books, like the next book in a series, or other works in your catalog. Store Links take a reader to the same store where they bought your book: your Kindle ebook links to Amazon, while your iBooks version links to the iBooks Store. That means readers will able to buy in their preferred store, and your book will be safe from the rejection that can happen when linking to the wrong one.
- If you have the Generic EPUB, the Store Link will be your own link that you provided. This can be used to direct readers to a page on your author website where you have more information about purchasing the ebook. Note: Because Generic EPUB is typically used for an aggregator that will list your book with multiple stores, you should not use a direct link from an a store here. Doing so may cause your book to be rejected.
- Links to Amazon uses Amazon Store Detection to automatically send readers to the regional store based on their location: a reader in London will be sent to amazon.co.uk, while a reader in the United States will be sent to amazon.com. I can disable location-based store detection upon Author's request and create links that send readers to the Default Store without considering their location.
Affiliate Codes
- Affiliate programs allow you to earn revenue if a reader purchases products within a short amount of time after clicking on your store links. If you are a member, you can specify your affiliate codes during the ordering process. You can learn more about each store’s affiliate program at Amazon, iTunes, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. While all affiliate programs have some restrictions, Amazon’s includes specific restrictions about where affiliate links can be included and the types of products that can be linked to. Please check with Amazon’s Operating Agreement and Fee Schedule before using. Note: if you don't specify an iBooks, Barnes & Noble, or Kobo affiliate code, then Indie Formatting or Vellum will use its own. In either case, commission paid to affiliates does not affect your royalties.
Export from Microsoft Word
If you’ve prepared your manuscript with Microsoft Word, you can just save it out to a .docx file. File / Save As / File Format: Word Document (.docx)
Export from Scrivener
If you’ve prepared your manuscript with Scrivener, you can use its Compile Dialog to create a .docx file that can be sent for formatting.
For best results, you’ll want to ensure that your chapter headings include the word ‘Chapter.’ (This isn’t necessary for elements like epigraphs or epilogues, of course.) For our simple manuscript, it’s easiest to include the chapter headings in the content of our book:
Now bring up the Compile Dialog by selecting File / Compile from Scrivener’s main menu:
Scrivener has an extensive list of compile options, which we won’t touch on here. For this file’s structure, however, it makes sense to ensure that each Section begins with a Page Break. If yours don’t, you can change them using Scrivener’s Assign Section Layouts… button.
If you have a more complicated structure, however, you may have to dig into some of Scrivener’s advanced options.
Now select Microsoft Word (.docx) from the Compile For: popup menu at the bottom of the dialog, and you’re ready to hit Compile. Note: Scrivener compiles into an older docx format, which means that images may not import into Vellum. If you have images in your document, we recommend opening and re-saving the file in Word.
